I’ve just had major surgery, and due to some mild concerns, I am being kept at the hospital. Between the pain meds and the anxiety, I’m barely coherent. My phone starts ringing, and thinking it’s a friend checking in on me, I answer. It’s my boss.
Me: “Hello?”
Boss: “Hey, can you come in today? [Coworker #1] called out, and I don’t wanna pull a double.”
Me: “I… am in the hospital? I had surgery?”
Boss: “Wait, what? Since when?!”
Me: “Since… Wait. I told you about this months ago when it was scheduled.”
Boss: “WAIT! DID I CALL [MY NAME]?!”
Me: “Um, yes?”
Boss: “S***, I meant to call [Coworker #2]. Well, you take care of yourself, and I’ll see you when you’re back.”
My boss ended up sending flowers to my house as a “get well soon” and apology gift. While a bit excessive, it was appreciated!
