She Didn’t Believe I Was in America Because I Worked on Thanksgiving

Published On: January 16, 2026

Today is Thanksgiving Day, and I am working in a tech support call center that, for some reason, has decided to maintain opening hours today. No one really wants to be here, but we’re enjoying that the calls are infrequent compared to normal days. I take a call:

Caller: “Oh, wow, someone’s there!”

Me: “Yes, we are open today.”

Caller: “But it’s Thanksgiving today!”

Me: “I am well aware.”

Caller: “Wait, does that mean I’m not calling America?”

Me: “Our call center is located in the United States, ma’am.”

Caller: “But you’re working! On Thanksgiving! You can’t be in America! I don’t want to speak to some call center in India!”

Me: *Not sounding Indian in the slightest.* “Ma’am, following your logic, no one in America can be working today because it’s Thanksgiving, but you’re insisting on talking to someone in America, therefore someone who should be working on Thanksgiving.

There is an extended pause as the caller processes this.

Caller: “…I’ll settle for a Canadian.”
